Seriously, your question deserves an answer. My system has been:
1. iMac Core 2 Duo computer
2. External 500gb Hard Drive
3. External 500gb Hard Drive (disconnected, for back-up)
4. Lacie D2 DVD/CD/EVERYTHING burner/reader
5. Powerbook G4 connected by Ethernet cable (for faster file
transfers)
6. Airport Extreme Base Station

Anyway, yes, the problem had to do with permissions. I had been ripping
CDs on the main computer and laptop at the same time. Afterwards, I
would transfer the ripped CDs to the main computer (hence the Ethernet
wire) and then import them to iTunes from the desktop.

Maybe all this file moving around was the source of the problems? The
files on the laptop were ripped via iTunes, too.
