Pat - wise words indeed. The problem I have with TAS is that the theory
is OK but in practice I want to listen to music I like to listen to -
I'm not interested in a solo trumpet at Carnegie Hall...

A lot of this music has been created/manipulated using various
technologies to be "what it is". It doesn't have a reference to any
real world touchpoint. So I want a system that makes Hotel California
sound great in my room - I want to enjoy listening to it. For me, it
doesn't have to sound "real" or "acurate" because I have no way of
assessing "real" in that context - just "great". To me, "great" means
exciting, emotional, pleasant, involving, foot-tapping, fun, sad,
stirring - those kind of words.
