Well, the way things have been explained to me is like this: The stereo image depends, ideally, upon a point source beamed directly at each ear. Now, suppose your speakers are on-axis. That means that you are getting the center of the waves emanating from the speakers. That is what you hear. Geometrically, how could you hear something to the outside of that line, unless it was reflected off a surface in some way? Again, I prefer the omni-directional nature of box speakers (although calling the Scorpios a box is a stretch). There is reflected sound and, done right, I suppose, it sounds right.
