I guess non-linearities in the amp could introduce extra phase
distortions in addition to harmonic distortion.  But I think I'm
correct in my statement, which is that the active (analogue) crossover
itself, when it splits the signal into woofer/mid/tweeter or whatever,
will introduce large phase shifts.

I've heard and played with such systems briefly, but I've never tried
one at home.  I'm going to audition some in the spring; I'll report
back after I do.  In particular I'm intrigued by the Linkwitz (with
analogue crossovers) and by this one, with digital:
