Hi guys

I have an SB3 (with the new mars bar remote). It is being served from a
Qnap TS-201 from Progressive running 6.3.1. The SB3 firmware is 55.

When running normally the SBs response is instant to the remote. I have
had no performance problems. I'm going over wireless from a LinkSys 54G
AP with 60-80% wireless signal.

Up until yesterday I'd really just played from time to time with it
(purchased for XMAS).

Yesterday 3 odd things happened.
Firstly whilst listening to a track the volume suddenly seemed to drop.
I instantly turned to the SB3. It all happened in a second, but I think
it was still displaying the track name. I touched the remotes volume
control and instantly the volume went back to the level it was
previously at.

Secondly, a few minutes after the above, the SB3 just appeared to power
off during a track. Playback stopped and the screen went blank. I think
the remote was unresponsive for a few seconds (but I can't be sure) and
then I managed to power it on with the standby button. After that it
behaved normally.

Thirdly .... I have just started to notice an annoying click at the
beginning of all tracks (except the only double album I encoded as
Apple Lossless). This click is volume sensitive - i.e. if the volume is
low, it's a very quiet click and if volume is high the click is very
high.

All my tracks (with the exception of the double album mentioned) are
either 128kb/s AAC or 256 kb/s AAC. All were encoded with iTunes.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions here.

Another confusion .... I read on the Slimdevices site that the SB3
supported AAC and Lossless AAC. I think I'm now right in thinking that
this is dodgy marketing. It appears that it is slimserver that supports
those formats and if you want to play one, it converts to a natively
supported format on the fly.

I may end up re-encoding all 400 of my CDs in a lossless format. If I
do, what do you recommend ?

If I continue to use AAC and Lossless AAC what format conversion should
I select in Slimserver ?

Someone mentioned there was an AAC to FLAC. In my 6.3.1 it only offers
AAC to wav or mp3 and bizarrely both are set. If I mess with these
settings it really seems to screw up the SB. Obviously if both are
unchecked it says it can't play the track and kind of hangs. If you
enable just the mp3 conversion, I think it still fails to play. When
you reenable both, the first track I played sounded very quiet and
dull. When I stopped it and tried again, it was back to normal. The SB
continued to be fairly slow at responding.

I have now kicked off a complete rescan. When that completed the SB was
performing normally again, but I still get the click at the beginning of
all tracks. It's driving me mad.

I'm in a bit of difficult position because I can't upgrade the firmware
on the SB because I can't upgrade the Slimserver as it's on Qnap (not
something I knew about when I purchased it). I also don't know if I can
extract logs off the qnap.

Cheers

Paul.
