With no load, I measured the wall wart's voltage at 5.18vdc.

I've build/modified a number of power supplies, both linear
and SMPS, and my experience has been that they do improve after being
powered up for 48 hours or more. For example, the makers of Black Gate
capacitors feel performance improves after 30 hours of use, see:

My linear psu doesn't run "hot."

If I put my ear right next to my linear psu, I can hear some noise, but
I can't hear anything in my very quiet dedicated listening room's
listening position. 

You can also hear noise, if you place your ear right next to the stock
wall wart. I'll bet you can also hear noise with your ear right next to
your Arcam amp, or any other piece of electronics that has a power
supply linear or SMPS.

I agree that some people may not hear any improve when they try an off
the shelf linear psu.
