Like you said if the analog is run through DSP in the pre/pro the upgrade to the better DAC chip would be useless. Plus it's the same DAC (i'm guessing) but the 'ke' version. There is even the possibility that the chip in your Sb performs just as well as a KE.
I would find out if you have true bypass for stereo available, and maybe hook the sub to a line out rather than LFE out, if you're going to compare the SB DAC to the one in the pre/pro.
