I agree that the goal should be to hear the music as intended by the
producer of the recording. Even most "live" recordings (that is,
recordings of live events) are processed/EQ'd/mastered in a way that is
not a true reproduction of the live event.

A few months ago, I happened to be in Chicago and went to a pretty
well-known blues venue called Kingston Mines. Awesome bands (two of
them), great atmosphere...and *horrible* sound! "Fatiguing" doesn't
even begin to describe it..."ice-pick-in-ear-drum" is a better
description. And for the most part, most live music venues that
feature amplified music sound pretty bad. But there aren't many live
blues recordings from venues such as these that are completely
ear-splitting, so obviously the recording folks have tailored the
recording to be easier to listen to.

Even on non-amplified venues, I find there is very little in terms of
"pinpoint imaging". And unless you're sitting 2 feet from the
performer, you're not getting much of the detail and tonal richness of
a closely-mic'd vocal or string instrument. But hearing those kinds of
recordings in a good system is very enjoyable to me, even if they don't
really reflect what a "live" performance actually sounds like.

A lot of what we listen to on a stereo recording is meant to synthesize
a live experience...even tho there is no pinpoint imaging in a real
venue, having imaging that helps you place musicians in a soundstage
provides an illusion of space (regardless of the fact that in the live
event, likely all the sound was coming out in mono from 2-3 PA
monitors).

And then of course, there is the studio-produced stuff that has no
meaning in terms of translating into a live event (think Dark Side of
the Moon)...
