Unbalanced cables are fine for short interconnects as long as you keep
them away from potential disturbances. Balanced cables will always be
at least as good (all other things being equal) but you would have a
hard time to tell them apart for short cables.

Balanced cables are needed if you run low level signals through long
cables. One situation where you typically have this is with
microphones. Another situation, which could very well be the case in a
home scenario, is to connect the sound source with a set of powered
speakers (i.e. without any central amplifier).
