I've just got to chime in here.. Many years ago I was lucky enough to
tour the Mark Levinson factory ( Madrigal Labs) I was talking with one
of the designers/ engineers about why they burn in everything He said
that a component would measure differently after being up and running
for 24-48 hours... No I don't remember what they were measuring for..
He said that brand new amps never measured the same when new as opposed
to the reference. The amps were of course also run in as part of the
100% QC process. I also remember asking about why the preamps and
digital gear didn't have power on/off switches on the front and why
they were designed to be powered up all the time. I was told that solid
state circuits need to reach "optimum thermal stabilty" to sound their
best, and that this often takes many, many hours with low current
devices, they also designed the chassis to help maintain the correct
thermal stabilty.
