Eric - I'd be very interested in what you find. I've managed to open the 24-bit wav in an editor and now I can see why it is so quiet...the peak level is 49%!!!!
Clearly the 24-bit output from MP to the wavout is not being scaled, it's merely merely having 8 bits added to it...in the wrong way!
