Your laptop PS is a switching supply just like the one that comes with the SB. Hanging a zener diode on it won't change the fact that it's a switcher.
It will take a big zener diode, and it will give very poor regulation. You can buy a 5V linear regulated power supply for about $10 -that is cheaper than you can buy the parts to build one yourself. Check Herbach-Rademan's power supply offerings.
