I'd tend to agree with this idea very much. Transporter is very high
level source, and it would be an overkill for the rest of your system.
You didn't mention your speakers, but I'd assume they are on par with
the receiver, quality wise. Go with the squeezebox, and then you'll
have a choce to compare its analog vs. digital through the receiver and
stick to what you like better. Especially, if your receiver doesn't have
analog pass through, then feature where the bigest improvement in
transporter is, its DAC, will be useless to you.

As far as computer goes, what you have is enough. Get some more disk
space, maybe another 512M of memory and go FLAC. Performance would be
more dependent on the ability of your network

The sound stage will open up, bass will tighten and the imaging will
improve. DVD performance will also increase substantially.
