If I understand correctly, you agree that I2S, so to speak, is superior to embedding the clock in the data over SPDIF, but don't think the benefit is retained with two box units compared to an internal converter. Since there isn't a I2S>SPDIF>DAC chain inside the Sb, I assume it's a superior connection- internally or externally- so long as the interface is well thought out including shielding (?).
