Sure, I agree with that...but it can't happen with SACD and DVD-A -by
design- and I think you and I agree at this point that it probably
won't happen with HDCD without modifications.

Your block diagram clearly shows that digital inputs go through the
DSP, so I was wrong about that.  But in order for the digital outputs
to be bit perfect, which is definitely something that's desireable for
everything *but* getting a decoded HDCD output, the DSP cannot alter a
single bit of the incoming digital signal.

You'd have to connect the data that's coming out of the DSP and going
to to the DAC with the S/PDIF transmitter out.

This wouldn't be cheap, because although A/V receivers are described as
cheap POSes by many audiophiles, HDCD-equipped receivers run in the
$1000+ range.  Marantz doesn't do it until the 7001, $1399.99 MRSP,
Denon not until the 3806, $1299 MSRP.  Having someone modifying it
would add $500?  $1500+ worth of extra equipment is not chump change.

It seems the software approach is the best one at this point.
