I had the SR7400 and now have the 8400. Yes, the bass management is carried out digitally so it will convert the analog to digital and back to analog. Try PURE DIRECT mode, which is supposed to bypass the DSP. You'll notice your subwoofer gets no signal. Most subwoofers can be fed the full-range L/R signal and do the bass management themselves entirely in the analog domain, but such an arrangement wouldn't be ideal for 5.1 modes.
