Just a little beyond the higher end of your bugdet, you should be able
to get a very decent integrated amplifier and a pair of speakers.

For amplifiers, some brands that you could look at, include NAD & Rotel
as Joatca suggested; others would be Cambridge Audio and some entry
level models from Marantz - Its hard to go wrong with these. For
speakers, similarly, look at KEF, Mission, Monitor Audio, Mordaunt
Short, B&W, Wharfedale, etc.

As Mark suggested, Blue Jeans cables are good but not too expensive. 

I have personally had very good experiences with most of the audio
stores I have visted, even if it was just to purchase a $65 pair of
Grado headphones. If you tell us approximately where you are located,
someone might be able to guide you to a friendly audio store in the
vicinity.
