I also recommend powered monitors. I use Genelec 8020s but they are above your price range. I would order the Audio Engines. Then take them to the music stores that sell pro audio gear in Seattle. Many of them have separate rooms with various brands of powered monitors ready to audition. Compare the AEs to as many brands and models that you can. Bring CDs you are familiar with. Speakers are a highly personal choice. This excersise should give you the greatest chance of finding something that YOU, and the Mrs., like.
