Might I suggest you have a peep over at www.head-fi.org They've got HEAPS and HEAPS of stuff in their forums on good cans.
Instead of 'noise cancelling' have you considered 'Isolation' based cans? Ones that come to mind are made by: Etymotic Research Shure Ultimate Ears I own a pair of the Etymotic ER-6i's which I love to bits. I wear them on long-haul flights and I can even sleep with them in. They have the ability to block out up to 36db which is a lot more than some others, and they don't need batteries. The sound is superb, although not quite as full as my AudioTechnica ATH-A900's. Still, for the size they're superb and good value. Let us know how you get on!
