The most plausible hypothesis as to why a linear, regulated power supply could improve the audio is that the electromagnetic interference (of the stock switching supply) can negatively affect other components that are not as well isolated as the SB itself. If you have components sensitive to this EMI, a different PS might create a significant improvement. If you do not, it probably would not.
