Certain segments of the "audiophile" community do a lot of damage to
their own credibility with their wild hyperbole and absolutist
declarations. As someone pointed out earlier in this thread, when
changing a power cord results in a "tremendous" difference one has to
suspect either a defect in the first power cord or that the listener
just might be engaging in a bit of overly dramatized embellishment.

I'm in the category that acknowledges there are often audible
differences between certain components. However, if good quality
equipment is involved, those differences generally tend toward subtle
as opposed to blazingly overt.

In fact, I can move my head a couple of inches and notice a difference
in how my system sounds. I have changed phase relationships between the
two speakers, I have changed the mix of direct to reverberant sound, and
probably impacted the frequency balance and other factors. However, in
spite of that I have no urge to run out and buy a head immobilizer to
keep my listening position at some optimal constant. However, when I
have listened to different power cords and interconnects in the past,
if I hear anything, it is at the same level of significance as moving
my head. So is the difference due to the cables or my inability to
duplicate a precise head position? (And note, we haven't even got to
the psychosomatic issues yet.)

I certainly have no quarrel with anyone who wants to spend their money
on expensive cables or anything else in the pursuit of their hobby.
However, they probably should remember two things. First there is a lot
of disagreement even between audiophiles (that often results in
diametrically opposing choices.) It shouldn't surprise anyone if other
people have different opinions. Second, the more rabid audiophiles
would probably find they'd get a bit more respect if they could drop
the really egregious hyperbole back a notch or two. It is not hard to
grant someone a license to hear what they believe they hear, but when
the language to describe a change of cables takes on a florid prose
that seems lifted from the sex scene of a dime novel, it is tough duty
for the rest of us to bite our lip and suppress the chance to snicker.
