I've not heard a Mac direct into a DAC. Certainly PCs cause all sorts of problems - the digital signal can suffer all sorts of processing, such as poor upsampling and more.
But I'm surprised the Mac is so noticeably better. Little or no difference I could easily understand, but your clear preference - are you sure the SB3 is functioning OK?
