If you search the forums here, I think you'll find the SB digital volume control issue has been well discussed. As I recall, there is no loss of audio quality in using the SB volume control as long as you keep it in the range above 40% or so.
What I did was set my SB3 volume at max and then play a medium soft track. I then adjusted the volume control on the Lavry so that the volume was near the maximum I most often use for listening. That means when I listen to music, my SB3 volume is almost always in the 70% to 90% range so I am solidly in no-loss-of-sound-quality territory.
