If you don't mind buying used, I'd suggest a EAD DSP-7000 MKIII. This
unit retailed for $2500 in the late 1990s. They can be had for around
$400 on Audiogon. Stereophile Class B and the personal reference of
reviewer Steven Stone.

The EAD is musically satisfying and totally competitive with the best
available today. As a bonus you get HDCD decoding.

Can't go wrong with this one, IMO.
