Thanks for the tips. I can now happily report that I ripped a CD to flac format - even if I am still slightly embarrassed for being such a klutz.
The problem was twofold. First, I needed to enter an E-mail address in the set-up wizard to access the database (which solved the unknown disk problem). Didn't know I needed to use the set-up wizard. The second was that the cut-and-paste I did for the flac command settings didn't properly put in all the commands (I clearly need better 'QC' on my own work). A manual re-type fixed it. Now I'm ready to go, and thank you all very much for your helpful assistance.
