It also depends if the receiver has a true analog bypass on it's analog
inputs.

Many modern receivers convert everything to digital internally then run
through the DAC. I think most Yamaha's in the last 10 years do this.

So by using using the analog inputs your actually going through 2 DACs
and an ADC. So even if the DAC in the SB3 technically was better than
what it's the receiver it may sound poor due to all the conversions.

Some receivers have Pre-Out - Amp-in Jumpers.

Just for kicks, try pulling the jumpers out and plug in the SqueezeBox
Analog outputs into the Amp In. Volume will be strictly done in the
squeezebox and volume on the receiver will be bypassed. This would
bypass the Receivers ADC and DAC and you'll get a true picture of what
the SB3 DAC sounds like. Make sure you enable analog volume and turn it
down before experimenting.
