The clock drift problem between multiple units can be overcome in these ways that I can see:
1. Distribute the clock signal. This can be done many ways. S/PDIF & AES/EBU embed the clock into the data. Due to the modulation scheme, it is hard to extract a low jitter clock signal at the receiving end. USB audio, if I understand correctly, uses the packet timing to embed the clock signal, and it is even more difficult to extract a low jitter clock signal at the receiver. This would be very hard to do with ethernet. Many studio facilities distibute "house clock" on a separate cable. Far flung facilities use GPS referenced systens to distribute a common clock signal wirelessly to various geographic locations. 2. Use an asynchronous sample rate converter to resample the incomming data to the local clock.
