The clock drift problem between multiple units can be overcome in these
ways that I can see:

1.  Distribute the clock signal.  This can be done many ways.  S/PDIF &
AES/EBU embed the clock into the data.  Due to the modulation scheme, it
is hard to extract a low jitter clock signal at the receiving end.  USB
audio, if I understand correctly, uses the packet timing to embed the
clock signal, and it is even more difficult to extract a low jitter
clock signal at the receiver.  This would be very hard to do with
ethernet.

Many studio facilities distibute "house clock" on a separate cable. 
Far flung facilities use GPS referenced systens to distribute a common
clock signal wirelessly to various geographic locations.

2.  Use an asynchronous sample rate converter to resample the incomming
data to the local clock.  The ASRC can also be used to solve the jitter
problems.
