I just tried EMU 0404 as a standalone DAC.

Sounds fine. But there are two issues with it.

1) If your music changes sample rate 16/44 (actually 24/44 on
SqueezeBox) to 24/48 it will not relock on it's own. It needs to toggle
power to get it to lock again. In a recording scenario bit rates don't
change on the fly so often so it's not a big deal. If all your music is
16/44 it's not a problem.

2) It also has a preamp in it (I assume it's analog) that you cannot
bypass. You can set output gain to be 0dB but your still going through
it. So if you are connecting direct to an amp this is good. If your
connecting to a preamp input it is not good.
