Well, I gave it a shot and I could not make sox do it. Sox does not work
with 24 bit data, and I cannot find a simple way of converting 24 bit
audio to 32 bit data before streaming into Sox.

On the other hand, streaming a 44.1 KHz - 16 bit flac file, I was able
to stream through sox, and apply a low-pass filter with a sharp knee at
500 Hz, and that worked fine: flac -> sox -> flac -> SB3. Interesting,
but not very useful.

I don't see how to do it using what is presently available.

Could the Inguz plugin  that normally does digital room correction be
used to do this - filter/resample a 96 KHz 24 bit stream to 48 KHz? I
am sure it has all the DSP necessary already in-hand?
