This has been very informational thread, thank you all. I found a copy somewhere :-) of "An Introduction to Digital Audio" by John Watkinson. Very interesting and actually understandable, but hardly an "introduction."
However, back to where this started. As Watkinson says in the book: if the effect of changing the cable can be heard, the DAC is a dud.
