Yes but Clive...getting a good ADC is quite an expensive challenge and you are going through an ADC-DAC chain unnecessarily. This "obsession" with no preamp doesn't make sense if you need a phono stage (and yes I did read your post carefully). Personally I'd rather buy a decent pre-amp with an internal or external phono stage. A lot depends on levels of quality required. A good external phono stage is going to be $1-2k. A good pre-amp with internal phono stages is going to be $2-3k. ADC's...well I'm not sure what would fit here.
