Maybe the difference being compared is who provides the clock. When
non-sync, locally stored music is played, the Squeezebox or Transporter
provides the clock reference and requests data from Slimserver as it
needs it. When multiple units are playing in sync and for most
Internet radio, the server controls the speed at which the data is
transmitted, but it still doesn't conrol the DAC clocks. Since the
clocks are not locked, the SB or TP likely has to do an Asynchronous
Sample Rate Conversion to prevent buffer underflow or overflow. This
can be as simple as just dropping or duping samples, which can be
fairly inaudible.

So maybe what is being compared is "normal" mode (with no ASRC) to
"broadcast" mode (includes ASRC). I would think that the ASRC would
give Internet radio the potential of sounding worse,,,
