I would really like to encourage the development of a plug-in for
on-the-fly detection of the companding bit, and subsequent transcoded
output of 24/44.1 when that bit is detected.  As you previously
indicated, it appears that one of the flags just indicates that soft
limiting was used in encode, while the compander flag indicates that
there is a benefit to expanding the dynamic range.  Further, this is a
case of straight reverse engineering (and only for one of the detected
flags which could be beneficial), and is not related in any way to
circumvention of a content protection mechanism, so it should not
present any actionable legal issues regardless of any potential
blustering.
