Yes, they tried it, it failed. It will be 50 years before the industry
tries again, and by then all media will be sold/rented/free over the 'net.

Three things:
1) the DVD-A folks were going to use only low res audio, since they were
focused on multi-track/surround. They were limited by the data
extraction rate of the DVD readers. It took Meridian to explain how
lossless works, how it could keep to the limited data rate and still
provide high/wide. The committee didn't believe such a think could
exist, so one of the Meridian engineers hacked up MLP (Meridian Lossless
Packing) overnight and demo'd it.

2) While there are lots multi-track recordings, there is no standard for
how the tracks are managed, no standard for how many speakers you need,
what kinds of speakers you need, etc.

3) While 5 or 6 full range speakers can sound wonderful, they are not
practical, they have a *zero WAF*. Its hard to imagine many married
audiophiles going for it. If the industry could standardize on small,
limited range rear, side, etc. speakers, the WAF would go up, and there
might be a tiny chance it would catch on.

The whole point of Sony's invention of DSD and SACD was to prevent
ripping to stop the overblown threat of music piracy.
