I hear ya, I was in the same boat with my Revel Concerta's but, depending on the kind of music you listen to, it can really make a difference. There's just no substitute for cubic inches! I don't have my sub set up with a lot of gain but it just makes everything sound more "substantial" (for lack of a better word). Maybe just demo a unit and decide then, you probably don't need a huge unit. I went with a relatively small sub just to give my system that extra something and it's hidden under a coffee table, so the wife didn't mind too much.
