No difference in sound quality either way. The only benefit to the SB3 is that it has no moving parts and is totally silent, so it works nicely in a dedicated listening room. And for controlling it from across the room, the VFD display and remote work well.
If your playback system is in the computer room you'll have the computer noise in the background whether you use the G5 soundcard or a SB3. One other thing you can do with the Squeezebox method is have multiple players around the house.
