Actually I'm cheating a little because I once attended a seminar on human vision, and (while I don't recall the details) I do remember that even the optic nerve bundle didn't have that much capacity. The really fascinating thing was that while they hadn't managed to crack the compression scheme (which is crucial if you want to make artificial eyes and help the blind), they did find that whatever it is, it comes very close to saturating Shannon - i.e., it's the most efficient possible compression scheme.
