My Modwright Transporter's DAC was indeed overdriving the tube stage. Dan fixed the design gaff in my player (he had been listening and voicing with digital volume down somewhat, accidentally, and didn't realize a couple of output measurements were off, relative to DAC output) and has overnighted it back. My ears do work!!
