There's a simple way to test that theory: turn the TP output down (say
to -24dB) and feed it into the preamp. If it still sounds harsh, it's
not due to overdriving the preamp.

Playback at -24dB means about 4 bits lost, so the TP's 24 bit DAC is
effectively being used as a 20 bit DAC. So no loss of resolution from
Redbook sources. Of course, it's likely that the bottom couple of bits
of the TP DAC aren't linear, so perhaps it should be regarded as a 22
bit DAC, in which case running it at -24dB effectively gives about 18
bits of resolution.
