> Monitors: have you had experience with ADAM P33a or Blue Sky systems
?

I have some familiarity with ADAM but none with Blue Sky other than
looking up what they are.

In which case why are you considering near field monitors or, even
worse, satellite speakers? Depending on the size of your large room and
how loud you want clean sound you require either midfield or main
monitors in the proaudio jargon.

For midfield monitors, Bluesky make something called a SAT 12 for $2500
each which may do the job, ADAM's equivalent is the S4VA Mk 2 at $4000
each, Genelec's is the 1037C at $5000 each. Dynaudio, ATC, etc... will
also make equivalents.

These are all tri amplified active monitors because strongly weighting
accurate sound will dictate this beyond a certain price point. They all
have 12" bass drive units in order to shift enough air to do loud in
medium sized rooms. Bigger rooms will require more and/or bigger drive
units.

Whether you would benefit from a subwoofer would depend on the type of
music you prefer and the condition of your room. In some rooms a
subwoofer can do more harm than good although this does depend to an
extent on what you want from the subwoofer. Enhancing the experience of
explosions or enhancing the experience of organ music are rather
different requirements.

Now I am guessing these straightforward solution are too expensive and
you will need to make some compromises? In which case the posters here
would need some idea of your requirements and their relative
importance. Do you want stereo or multichannel? How big is your room?
Do you really prefer the studio monitor sound? How loud do you want and
how loud/deep the bass? Do you want passive or active speakers. If the
former do you have a 5 Watt valve amplifier or a 1000 Watt solid state?
Etc...
