There is no way on earth I would not detect the 128k MP3, let alone the
64k, *every* time when it comes to a recording I am familiar with and
that I appreciate to listen to in great resolution.

Here's my SB3 story: After initial listening tests crosslistening to
256k MP3 on my reference system (Accuphase DP65 CD and E306 integrated
amp) compared to the original CD, thought 256 MP3 would be enough. But
after a few months of listening and burning CDs, I started to get the
feeling that indeed some resolution was missing, the "airiness" wasn't
quite there. So my fav recording I had to go for 320k and also keep in
FLAC.

Honestly it is impossible to reliably hear a difference between the
320k MP3 and FLAC with reliability, but it *is* possible to hear the
difference to 192k and up to 256k given time on a pristine high quality
recording (Kevin Mahogany's "Pride and Joy" serves as my reference).

I could understand if the debate was about 256k MP3 upwards against
uncompressed, but 128k? Give me a break. *Very* easily detectable.
Every time.
