I believe "flac -test" runs the file through the decoder, generates an MD5 hash and compares it with the one in the file header which was generated when the file was encoded. If I'm understanding correctly, it not only catches "bit rot", but if you upgrade to a newer version of flac, this test will ensure that your files still decode properly. It seems that Josh Coalson has done some very cool things to ensure the reliability of flac. "flac -v", which runs a decoder in parallel when encoding verifies the file encoded properly on YOUR hardware with YOUR data. And, if I'm understanding correctly, "flac -test" will actually verify that a file will decode properly with the version of flac you currently have, regardless of the encoder version.
I think there are windows "wrapper" programs to do the flac test, but I'll probably write my own so I can have the same program on both Windows and Linux. I've been working on a lot of cross-platform stuff at the office, so I have a pretty good toolkit at this point for putting together this type of thing. I've already got some Windows "wrapper" programs for doing certain "metaflac" operations as I rip my CDs. I'm putting together a new linux box so I can move SqueezeCenter off of my Windows machine, and I may just see how many of my audio tasks I can move to Linux. -- Timothy Stockman ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Timothy Stockman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8867 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42358 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
