It's not an issue of sound quality for the digital control per se, it's
just a question of where best to put it. If it's before the DSP then you
have less dynamic range for the DSP to work with.

It's exactly the same issue as in a purely analog system. If you're
putting, say, an analog equalizer in the signal path, you should put it
before your level controls.

That said, from a practical standpoint I think the actual difference
would probably be negligible, provided the DSP's behavior is linear
with respect to input level.
