You do have the "DVD digital out" set to "PCM" (not AC-3) AND the "Downmix" set to "normal" (not surround) don't you? It's easy to not set both of these... Also are you using Toslink or coax - there are known issues with this particular player where the two connectors behave differently (even though that defies logic) - try both...
