Sean makes a good point about specialised compression/decompression algorithms being about to out-perform general purpose algorithms like zip. I like the gif/jpeg example. A more extreme, if rather contrived, example is that with the correct algorithm you'd be able to do a much better compression job than zip of compressing a file containing the first million digits of pi!
