This way lies madness. At what sample rate and bit depth should we
stop, or should we continue increasing it forever? The audiophiles (who
have great difficulty understanding the difference between mastering and
format) have no suggestions on how to determine when enough is enough.

Yes these types of issue are audible (I would argue the difference
between red book and hi rez isn't). You can hear exactly this kind of
thing with well-recorded red book.

Hey red book is here, it is widely accepted, it is DRM-free, it is
flexible, and no-one...NO-ONE...has proved it's audibly worse than hi
rez. Relax and enjoy!

I went to the Park Inn Hi-Fi Show in London yesterday. My friend and I
settled in two rooms which we agreed were best-at-show. Most relaxing,
non-irritating, don't-want-to-analyse-it sound. One room was the
Aurousal single-driver stand-mounter and another the Phasesonics
array-driver two-box floorstander. Both of these represent British
'cottage industry' hi-fi. But we spent the last hour in these two rooms
chatting with the manufacturers...because everywhere else sounds were to
be heard that were impressive but ultimately unenjoyable. These two
systems had their limitations but ultimately we just enjoyed being
there.

The single-driver stand-mounters (Aurausal A1 Mk2) in particular were
nice. They've changed my outlook somewhat on single-driver speakers.
They would make a great loudspeaker for a small second system. My
point: these guys were using a -cheapo DVD player to play CDs-, and a
very old budget Cambridge Audio amp. Amazing. Beat the hell out of
other exhibitors with multi-k fancy source for listenability and
non-fatigue: the supposed 'intangible' benefits of hi rez.

YMMV etc. :)
