First, please provide evidence that -anything- at -144dB is audible at anywhere near ordinary listening volumes. Second, I'm pretty sure you're wrong that one needs dither for this, although I'll have to think it through to be sure. It seems to me that rounding will introduce some extra harmonic distortion (because each Fourier component, rounded, will differ from the original in a harmonically related way).
