Wouldn't the last four ones be lost in the noise floor though? If that is the case you really only have 4 bits to play with before resolution gets lost in noise. Also, if the DAC has 120dB dynamic range, and you attenuate 8 bits, you're only left with 72dB of dynamic range. I just figure if I'm going to have the preamp in the path regardless (integrated amp), I may as well send it the best source signal I can.
