Of course Sean is the real guy to answer this, but.... You're forgetting that the volume control is done in the digital domain, not in the analog. From the descriptions, I believe that there used to be two digital stream paths, one at full level, and the other volume controlled. In order to implement some of the additional functionality, one of these parallel paths had to be eliminated. So there's no way to have a full volume digital output, either for an external DAC, or an external digital loop processor, AND have a volume controlled analog out....
