I agree that power supply design is critical. And I think things have
changed quite a bit over the last ten years. It's now not uncommon to
have at least one piece of hi-fi using an SMPS, even more likely that
there is something using an SMPS somewhere in the same dwelling - all
corrupting the mains supply. There's a whole lot more RFI floating
around than there was, and goodness knows what other mains pollution
with the mains cables expected to carry various high frequency
signals.

Today it is much harder to design a power supply that can cope with all
the 'rubbish' on the mains. In addition, the power of the accountant has
grown to the detriment of the designer. Probably an audiophiles best
friend these days is some sort of isolation transformer, better still
smaller ones between equipment in the same system. I don't think that
we can just rely on the power supply being properly designed any more.

Of course all this is variable and depends a lot on your location, and
a lot on what other equipment you have in your home/system. And that
probably accounts for many of the disagreements  amongst us about the
performance of our equipment, and the reasons for that performance!
